My Journey with Anxiety

I remember about 3 months ago when I was in a management meeting on the forth floor and it felt like the floor was going to collapse under me. I wasn’t in the impacts of a natural disaster or a building structure failure. Rather I was feeling the impacts that anxiety can have. Daily fears and worries on the high end of the scale were part of my day. I found it very hard to switch off or even relax. My mind was constantly going and when I think back the thoughts I had were silly. Only under rare circumstances would the floor underneath give in. I was struggling with this daily. I never used to be like that and I definetely didn’t recognise myself. Mental disorders never used to make sense to me. I also never thought it would happen to me.

About a bit over 2 months ago I came across a video on YouTube where this super inspirational lady shared her path and how she recovered. In short she discovered meditation. She made it a daily practice. I didn’t have much to loose and I certainly wanted a break from all those worries. I started off small with 10 to 15 minutes a day. Gradually I increased it where I now do 30 minutes every single morning before I go to work. And yes I do get up at 5am in order to get this me time but the benefits have been worth it. I feel much calmer and I bounce back much quicker from stressful situations. I have also noticed that my work has become much better.

I hope that by sharing my experience it might inspire someone that suffers from the daily struggles of anxiety to look into and try meditation. In future posts I will be sharing some of my favourite techniques with you so make sure to subscribe so that you will not miss out.

My Hair Loss and Henna Experience

With the increasingly toxic load in modern day hair colours; I decided it was time to turn to a natural method about 4 years ago. I don’t really like the natural grey hair highlights my hair was dealing me so I researched various methods that are natural and ended up with henna.

If the colour is prepared in the correct way then it will even cover greys. The key to this is adding some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Some great videos that I have found are by Morrocco method on how to prepare the colour. Here is one how to prepare brown henna hair colour.

 

When I hit rock bottom last year I had a lot of hair loss and was worried that the use of henna would have a negative impact on my hair. I used to have handfuls of hair falling out when I combed my hair and when I showered. It was a very scary time period. However I believe in conjunction with use of the Morrocco Method shampoos, henna continues to strengthen my hair. My hair looks more vibrant than it has in a long time. I use henna once a month and trim my hair at the same time.

Some of the benefits of henna include

  • Helps repair the damaged hair strands and restores the acid-alkaline balance of the scalp.
  • Helps to protect hair strands by building a protective layer and locking the nutrients and moisture.

What I Learned From a Lunch Time Work Assignment

Tuesday. I had spent all morning at a morning at a training session about equal employment opportunities and bullying. It was a very informative session, however they naturally put your workload on hold and it can feel a bit like the to do pile keeps rising to the size of a skyscraper. With my supervisor on three weeks leave and me being in the role in my second month only, I was learning at an accelerated speed.

When I came back to my desk my “neighbour” told me that the director had requested I come and see him when I get back to my desk. I had organised to meet my friend for lunch and considered whether it might be a better option to see him when I return from my break. In  my hope that it wouldn’t take long he gave me an urgent task required for a meeting in the afternoon. The task ended up stretching out with changing requirements and as it got so late I never ended up seeing my friend that day.

My active mind likes to reflect so I thought about what I could have done differently. I am not sure why it never crossed my mind to honestly mentioned my lunch date and ask whether I could tackle the task after my break. I very likely also would have done a much better job. I suppose it comes down to having your priorities straight and knowing the things that matter to you most. It is so important to have boundaries, know them and communicate them in an assertive way. I certainly stuffed up that day and can’t possibly put into words how bad I felt. They key is to find the lesson and find a way to do better next time that lines up with your values.

 

Why I started Eating Sweet Potatoes for Breakfast

On a cold winter’s day, when you turn on the engine of your car it takes a little while for the motor to warm up so that it operates at its best. This same principle applies to your body. When it is cold outside your body may benefit from something to warm up its engine and get it going.

I love the warm summer weather. Over time I have figured out that I can no longer do a big cold smoothie in the morning when I get up and am already feeling cold. I get irritated and I struggle to show my happy self. I need delicious food that warms me up such as soups and stews.

A couple of weeks ago I read about traditional Chinese medicine and how it is recommended to have ginger tea and warm food for breakfast. So I have started enjoying steamed sweet potato with coconut yoghurt and fresh herbs from the garden as my first meal of the day.

I am always a bit suspicious whether too much cooked food will make me feel less energetic however I have felt more constant energy and more balance overall since changing my breakfast.

It is sad when you realise that so many of us have lost touch to our bodies and spirits. We have all the answers inside of us but we can only uncover them if we allow ourselves to connect and explore. Our needs are different and therefore we all need to figure out what is right for us at the time.

Is Balance in Life Really Possible?

In the media as well as in the personal development industry we are continually bombarded that all areas in life should be balanced. But is this really possible? Is this really achievable? In the past I certainly have aimed for life balance but it seems I never find myself in this perfect balance of life so many talk about.

I have adopted a slightly different approach that seems to work well for me at the moment. I focus on what is important to me in life and write the main areas down. Next I rate them according to importance. I aim to prioritise these areas as best as I can.

In order to find the things that are important to you, you can also ask yourself this question “what would I regret if I never ever got to do this again?”. Now this might be spending time with your spouse, spending time with your kids or spending time on something that you are super passionate about.

Make sure though that you don’t end up with a never ending list of important things in your life and aim to stay under about 5 items on this list. You want this to be realistic and achievable so that the whole process doesn’t become overwhelming.

People Spend Their Health to Gain Wealth and then have to Spend Their Wealth to regain Their Health.

 

 

This is certainly one of the places where I took the wrong turn. I honestly believe and know that there is a better way out there then to work the normal system called 9-5. If you need proof then look at all those people out there that are already doing it. And don’t even start with that general excuse “Oh they are just lucky”. It is certainly possible.

However for a second or a  bit longer I got carried away there where I was building multiple businesses without even leaving time for myself or time for my health. You are facing a problem once the $ becomes your main decision making tool. I wouldn’t allow myself much that wasn’t productive and would contribute to becoming financially independent. While that is highly productive it does not help you once you burn out.

After I burned out last year I would get up in the morning and wasn’t sure how I would even make the drive to work. When I was in meetings or even just standing at a morning tea at work I would feel so dizzy that I would hope I wouldn’t collapse. It was a scary place. My stress levels were at their maximum. You don’t realise how important health is until you literally loose it.

Now I aim for consistency and sustainabiliy rather than doing a sprint. Did you know it takes 10,000 hours to master any skill? Now put that into perspective. That means 193 hours every week if you want to master a skill in the 52 weeks in a year. Now that would mean that you would need to work 27 hours a day on your skill. We have a problem here. The day only has 24 hours (!) and that doesn’t take into account any time for eating and sleeping or perhaps a shower in between so you feel refreshed.

What I have learned it that there is no get rich quick scheme, every business requires time and consistency to achieve success. I have also learned that it is very important to do something that aligns with your values otherwise it will drain you. Focus on one thing that makes you feel good or brings out the best in you and aim to be consistent and sustainable in your actions.
